The Department for Work and Pensions is the largest government department in the United Kingdom. Its main role is to take responsibility for the organisation of welfare and pension policies. The department has been running since 8th June 2001 (along with the pension service) and has since had an aim to help people become financially independent and to help reduce child poverty. Call the DWP support service for the opportunity to speak to an adviser about any DWP related issues you might be having, whether that’s to do with your benefit entitlement or your state pension. To make their phone system efficient, the DWP support service has a switchboard system. This also means that you can be put through to the right department as soon as possible. When dialling the support service on 0843 218 9626 press 1) for state pension queries, press 2) for benefit entitlement, press 3) for financial advice and press 4) to discuss Universal Credit. If none of the above applies to you can press 0) to speak directly with an operator.

If you receive any type of benefits or Universal Credit, you should call 0843 596 3259 for any enquiries you might have that relate to this. Again, a switchboard will take you through to the correct department. You should press 1) for Universal Credit enquiries, 2) to discuss your state pension, 3) for a child tax credit advisor 4) for disability and carer benefits and 0) to speak with an operator. If you choose to speak with an operator you should state your reason for calling. They will either put you through to a more relevant department or assist you there and then

State Pension  – 0844 375 3143

State Pensions can sometimes become a little complicated and this is where the State Pension helpline comes in. The aim of this number is to assist anyone that is struggling to get to grips with state pension laws, whether you are an employee or employer. Call 0844 375 3143 to speak with an operator. When you are through to the state pension helpline please state why you are calling, whether that is to check your state pension, delay/defer your state pension or to find out further information about the new state pension. There are also more complex issues that you can discuss such as what happens to your pension and taxes after the death of a spouse, how to receive carer’s credit if you are a carer to someone else and information you might need about National Insurance credits.

Job Centre Plus – 0843 218 9629

The Job Centre Plus is a big organisation and so it is important to state your reason for calling to the operator. The Job Centre Plus used to issue several different benefits for different purposes but they are now all rolled into Universal Credit. However, if you have been a recipient of benefits for a while, you might not have been changed over to Universal Credit yet and therefore need to speak about your benefits seperately. Please just ensure you state what type of help you are receiving so that you can be put through to speak with the relevant member of the team.
